WATCH LEVON HELM PLAY GUITAR AND OUTSTANDING THE BAND PERFORMANCES FROM 1970

In 1970 a number of acts including The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, The Band and Delaney & Bonnie & Friends embarked on a tour of Canada in which they traveled from stop-to-stop aboard a chartered train. The tour was immortalized in a 2003 concert filmed dubbed Festival Express. Not only were many of the songs filmed used in the documentary but an additional batch was included as bonus footage on the DVD. However what’s been released isn’t all that was shot in 1970 by filmmaker Frank Cvitanovich.

The reels containing all of the Festival Express footage are available for license through stock film house Historic Films. Historic Films has been sharing footage from that tour on the firm’s YouTube Channel. A few “new” clips featuring The Band have popped up recently with the exciting note that “a re-release of the film with many unseen extras is in the works for later this year or Early 2014.”

Let’s check out some of the clips Historic Films has shared lately:

Here’s rare footage of “Jemima Surrender” featuring Levon Helm on guitar:

Watch The Band perform “Long Black Veil” featuring vocals from Rick Danko:

Finally, here’s “Rocking Chair” with the late Richard Manuel on vocals:
