Leftover Salmon Ends Hiatus, Confirms Summer Festival Appearances Colorado-Based Group Returns to the Stage with Its Polyethnic Cajun Slamgrass

Denver, CO – March 16, 2007
Colorado-based Leftover Salmon announces it will return to the stage later this year. Confirmed by a statement today from band manager John Joy the return will mark the end to the band’s 27-month hiatus.

Following the band’s last live performance on New Year’s Eve 2004 in Boulder, audiences nationwide will once again hear the trademark polyethnic-cajun-slamgrass sound that propelled the group from its humble Rocky Mountain beginnings to international critical acclaim.

The returning lineup for Leftover Salmon features Vince Herman (acoustic guitar, vocals), Drew Emmitt (mandolin, guitar, vocals), Jeff Sipe (drums), Greg Garrison (bass, vocals), Bill McKay (keyboards, vocals), and Noam Pikelny (banjo).

The confirmed performances have the band making festival appearances on opposite coasts including the High Sierra Music Festival in Northern California and the All Good Music Festival in West Virginia’s hills.

Confirmed 2007 Performances:

  • High Sierra Music Festival - July 5-8 - Quincy, CA
  • All Good Music Festival - July 13-15 - Masontown, WV

Leftover Salmon was formed by accident in 1989, when a local band, the Salmon Heads, asked members of the Left Hand String Band to fill some missing spots in its lineup. The synergy worked and the resulting quintet went on to pioneer its own genre.

After the independent release of Bridges to Bert in 1993 and the 1995 live follow-up Ask The Fish, Leftover Salmon gained a spot on the H.O.R.D.E. festival tour and a contract with Hollywood Records. Their Hollywood debut and second studio album, Euphoria, continued to define their eclectic sound and introduced many songs that would become classics for the band.

Other releases include The Nashville Sessions (1999) featuring scores of famous Nashville artists and session musicians as collaborators; Live (2002) the first recording with the new rhythm section, O Cracker, Where Art Thou? (2003) featuring Cracker members David Lowery and Johnny Hickman with LS as the backing band, and Leftover Salmon (2004) first studio record since the loss of founding member, banjoist Mark Vann.

Each of the band’s releases cements its contemporary sound with the solid genre-bending fusion of newgrass, folk and blues. Through the course of the initial 15 years of Leftover Salmon has performed music with such contemporaries as Sam Bush, Bela Fleck, David Grisman, Jerry Douglas, Del McCoury, Peter Rowan, Pete Wernick, Col. Bruce Hampton, Oteil Burbridge, Bill Payne, Darol Anger, Mike Marshall, Pete Sears, Todd Park Mohr, Tony Furtado, Theresa Andersson, along with members of the The String Cheese Incident, Widespread Panic, Yonder Mountain String Band and dozens of additional artists.

The band continues to break new ground with its highly energetic live performances and initiate new fans with each show.

this is the best news ive heard in awhile! LOS is nasty on every genre. ive heard these fellas drop a funk-bomb as sick as Parliament-Funkadelic or Sly and the whole stoned family! then they change on a dime to some trippy progfolk and segue to the "trademark polyethnic-cajun-slamgrass sound." i couldnt resist repeating that blurb of genius!

I am really blown away. I am so excited to see them at High Sierra. Finally moving out of Indiana after 27 years and not long after I get to Portland I get to go see one of my all time favorites!!! Only one concern... Has anyone hear heard Greg Garrison play bass. I only saw Leftover in the Tye North, Mark Vann days and I've heard Noam Pikelny and know he does a good job of filling the amazing Zann's place...how does Garrison do? Tye North was just so badass and it kills me to see anyone that was ever in the original lineup not playing with them. Someone tell me this guy is awesome. Much love. Thank you for the return Leftover...our scene seriously needs it. Maybe Phish someday too..hehe.

He is awsome. Greg is phenomenal. I loved Tye and would love to see him play with LoS again but you have nothing to worry about. Mark Vann was really the piece that couldn't be replaced. Noam, however, is one of the best banjo players on the scene today and is Bela Fleck's protege. The addition of Greg and Noam vs. Mark and Tye definitely makes the band different. LoS will never be the same without Vanngogh but they are still the best band alive with Greg and Noam. They have replaced Mark and Tye with two of the best at their craft. Noam took awhile to find his groove with the band but man, they were really hitting their stride when they took the "hiatus". Greg is considered a young virtuoso like all the members of his "other" project the amazing supergroup with phenoms Chris Thile, Gabe Witcher, and Noam.

also adam- the original lineup included Michael Wooten on skins and trust me Jeff Sipe always delivers-he's my favorite drummer. This current LoS lineup is top notch all the way. Last time I saw this lineup(with Sipe) was at State Bridge, summer of '04 and it was crazy good.

This is good news, it's been a while and it will be good to hear the Salmon again! They've had their ups and downs with all the lineups - even with the classic Vann/Sipe/North combo they got a little too wasted sometimes and some of their stuff after Mark died was a little rough but on the whole they have brought me a lot of happiness and I think there's been enough time for the Salmon to be fresh again. I wish it were Tye though, he is such an amazing bass player.

jimsan- I'm guessing you're about 15 yrs old and using your mommie's computer to post negative messages on every article here on jambase. The fact that your favorite band is Sum 41 says enough. The fact that you say you voted for "Moron",as your favorite band, the juvenile Sum 41, calls Bush,(which is a lie cause you're obviously too young to vote), tells us everything we need to know about you. Nothing says FESTIVAL!!!!! like LOS. These guys don't sleep and pretty much don't appreciate those that do. They roam the campgrounds at dawn, pull tents down, and when the hassled hippies come out with a WTF?! surround them and do the "ATTAWACK" song. Classic knuckleheads to the hilt. At Hornings a few years back I was awoken by these guy's riding 'Mayor McCheese' with a tow rope attached to a golf cart in the 'then' dirt infield wielding bottles of Jack. The driver of the cart was intent on jerking them off 'Mr.Mack'. I've never been laughing so hard so soon after waking up. HSMF rocks.

mcallis- That's funny cause that's exactly what most people I know think of the bisco- you have to be on drugs or be under 21 to like them. Last time I saw them the average age at the show was around 17. Half of the kids nearly unconscious and so zombied out, they could of been spinning to a saw cutting wood and not known the difference. Actually that's what those guys sound like when they sing, anyway.

I have to agree. I've seen Bisco twice and was extremely unimpressed. Their singing is terrible and the stereotype that follows their fans is too true. I mean, c'mon, their name is "Disco Biscuits."

I always vote, I pay 2 mortgages, and I will never have a car payment again in my life-only buy cars I can pay for w/o financing....and yeah, I'm a "fucking old hippie". Yes, I was obviously exaggerating the youth of the crowd to make a point, moron. It was an all ages show and "most" people were definitely under 21.... Sunglasses and stupid hats with gucci logos were dominant. I'll agree that they have a very good guitar player and instrumentally they aren't bad, though not even in the same league with LoS. Love to see them play acoustic sometime with nothing to hide behind... the biscos are overrated and their arrangements are boring and monotonous.

hey mcallis- don't really want to get into this but it's so typical of a punkass little bitch like you to judge people by what car they drive or how much money they have- you should worry more about what kind of fuel you use, you idiot....and I have no idea what makes you think kids from the northeast, or "from the city", are any more affluent than kids from the bay area, seattle, LA, or from especially from places like boulder or vail, co....you can also tell who the teenagers are(like you, you freaking liar), cause they still think of themselves and their age group as "rich kids". when you stop judging people by their PARENTS financial status then you can start thinking of yourselves as "starting" to grow up. some of the wealthiest, 10 figure rich(and who cares about that anyway except shallow kids?) people I know are "old hippies" who, if you saw at a show or fest would think they were poor. you are truly a tool and make yourself look worse with every post.

oh, and btw, I'm 35, have several million $ in my portfolio, live in Santa Cruz in a house worth over a million(which buys surprising little here) and carry a 2 handicap....and I drive VW Passat, which runs on veggie oil. you, I'm guessing are about 22 and call your parents every month for money.

You came onto this board and started out with making negative comments about a great band with a bunch of great fans. I know the guys in LoS and many of their long time fans. This is really one of the greatest scenes out there. I also personally know Marc and the rest of the Disco Biscuits. These are both great bands with great fans. You are the kind of fan and person that embarass the guys in the band and give their following a bad name. I can also tell you for a fact that they are getting alot of negative feedback from venues and festis about a small percentage of their crowd who choose to behave like children. Please stop this nonsense of comparing two different bands in completely different genres and talking about cars, incomes, parents net worth and all this other garbage. This is a site for music fans and the members of both of these bands will cringe when and if they ever see these comments. Especially the offbase comments of mcallis1, the antagonist of this thread. LoS definitely has an older, more grounded, fanbase than the tDB. I happen to be in NYC right now, although I live in Monterey and for mcallis1 to say some of the comments he makes gives the great music fans of the northeastern U.S., a black eye. You can be sure Vince, Drew..... or Brownie would agree with me on this.

jonlevine4 - you're 100% right. I'm sorry I got sucked into the negativity by a few people who feel they have to come on the comment board and start talking crap about one of my all time favorite bands. mcallis is all over jambase spreading a negative vibe. He is an instigator of bad vibes and he probably turns alot of people off to one of his favorite bands. For some reason there are a few bisco kids on jambase that feel they have to spread their negative opinion about slamgrass or bluegrass music everywhere they can. In the end, it's whatever gets you off. Groove to what you like and let others groove to what they like. I just don't get why someone who obviously doesn't like LoS would come here and start talking shit. And he does it on several different boards for bands and festivals where bisco isn't even on the bill. I'm sure the bisuits have plenty of really cool fans and they are the majority. One, or a few, bad apples.......

No,fetivarian...MOST are bad apples. I have only gotten in one fight in my show career..400+, and it was at a biscuit show. I managed to whip three of them I guess because they were in a k hole. I won. They suck.

mcallis1, why don't you spend some of your money you make taking in the ass to get some grammar lessons. Even poor hippies can spell. I still call your bluff, especially if you can reply to posts so fast on here.

Anyone with money wouldn't need to brag about it unless they are full of shit like yourself. AND, if you did have cash you would be doing a plethora of other cool shit. But, since you don't you're in your dorm room being a tool. All by yourself I might add, because you couldn't dial RENT-A-FRIEND to find someone to hang with. Start blowing up that doll now you TOOL, cause that's about the only CUMRAG you will ever have.

Wow. mcallis-making lots of friends I see. Sounds like whoever you're talking about has a noble and gratifying profession to be proud of. You seem to be most proud of your imaginary trust fund, which is NOT an accomplishment by the way. Let your lovelight shine, mcallis, because you are such a great soul. Really nice the way you talk about your imaginary girlfriend, too. You must be really popular at your high school.
Man, talk about having too much time on your hands, mcallis. You forget that you started the negative posting and you act like you're the victim......and yeah "you already said you like both bands". Read your last post on the AllGood thread. In the same thread you say "take your shitty slamgrass back to the hills" and rip on everyone from Tennessee, then you say you like the band? You're a psychopath and the definition of TOOL!!

Actually he is a compulsive liar, who does take it in the ass. Teaching isn't a dead end job dildo. I work, if you call it that for 6.5 months out of the year...and with my masters +30 hours, the pay is pretty decent if not awesome. You said something about your the type of prick ass who needs to be a CEO or something. CEO's are usually smart people, who are educated and can use grammar correctly. Keep conjuring the lie's you tool, at least everyone on here know's how big of a STROKE you are.

Lastly, before my Spring Break starts...Instant gratification for me is worth so much more than the "fake millions" you lie about. Loser, and wipe the cum off your face...that's embarressing.

This thread is an absolute catastrophe. Why is it that Bisco gets brought up on every single comment board regardless of whether they are mentioned in the article? It's not just supporters of Bisco that perpetuate this endless and pointless debate either. I've seen posts on random articles that simply say "Bisco sucks" without even referencing the actual article.

LoS rocks live. So does Bisco. Apples and oranges stylistically. Most importantly, both are hardworking musicians who put their heart and soul into their craft. Innovation, precision, ENERGY. Dedication to AESTHETICS and artistic expression rather than marketing. These are qualities that deserve respect regardless of whether you are more into "slamgrass" or "jamtronica" or whatever.

Nobody cares how much money any of you have. That's the great thing about shows & festivals, the overwhelming and infectious sense of community, of thousands of people from all walks of life under the same roof united under a banner that reads "This music makes life better!" Does wealth (or lack thereof) really have any effect on how much or why someone can appreciate music? At some point during a GOOD show (tDB, Salmon definitely qualify), you just "get it", and you feel that tingly feeling in your spine that no drug can replicate, and you can't help but grin like an idiot, and you look around and see a bunch of other people grinning like idiots, and all social/economical class distinctions disappear if only for that moment.

Welcome back LoS, come play Hookahville! I know you love Ohio, Vince!

WOW!!! I heard the announcement on KBCO last week and BOY HOWDY did I want to do a back flip!!

The thing that got me Hooked ><> on the boys is how much FUN and LOVE is there for all the folks. Leave your baggage at the door and prepare to get your groove on. Dress up, Dress down, come in your pajamas for all I care- just be sure to have on your dancin’ shoes. Salmon will cover the most diverse songs/groups, and then leave tears (of joy or empathy) in your eyes with their heartfelt originals. To me, they gave The Secret years ago. Anyone that truly listens to music (esp. LoS) knows! for me the words are the most powerful part.

Double WOW at how this announcement could get such responses... the good and the bad. Many have tried to turn the post around (I applaud your attempts), but healing must come from within. If we all embrace the inner LoSer, or recognize the part of him that is the part of us, maybe we can LOVE it to death. I’m not saying ignore the problem and it will go away, just if we stop fueling the fire maybe, just maybe the winds of change will blow it out. Some have said hat this guy is a loser, but aren’t we all?! At least at some time or another.

LoSer….. Lets look at the word together for a moment. I once had this debate with someone I knew on how this is pronounced. I said loo-zer, he said L-o-S-er’s. Any input? “I’m a loser baby” and proud of it. Anyone that knows LoS knows their little subtleties. So I may be called an uber tree hugging, tie dye wearing, broken down van driving, peace sign showing, BUSH HATING hippy- by some folks for Spreading the LOVE! But I tell you one thing that I AM for sure- THAT’S HAPPY! It doesn’t matter to me if your rich or poor- only if you’ve got a good vibe. “Spread the Love! Spread Salmon! Get high on Love! Get High on Salmon!”, Vince- Festerville MO.

Is there gonna be a new Festival List? Or has this takin' over? Would love to get a B'n'P going, and ask some tapers/fans if they have shows I'm missing parts of.

May the light of love and the power of peace always guide your way,
    Sista Bear

    "Who feels it knows it"
    "Hit me with music"

This post took me a while to write, mostly because I'm at work, but I let time simmer down the heat I felt from these negative posts. Then when I decided to cut and paste from word I came across this fine paragraph that the people of Jam Base decided to write:
"Thanks for commenting, we appreciate your opinion, but please think before you type; ask yourself if your comment will add anything to the discussion and be sure to read your comment before posting to make sure your intentions ring true."

"Before You Add Your Comment: Please note that your comment will be immediately posted and available to EVERYONE. Please read over your comment before submitting and check for spelling, grammar or anything you don't want the world to know and associate with your name, forever. We reserve the right to remove comments at our discretion."
