Set upon the scenic St. Johns River and expansive Atlantic Ocean, Jacksonville is considered by many to be the birthplace of Southern rock. The city gave rise to legendary groups The Allman Brothers Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd, and their disciples Blackfoot, .38 Special, Molly Hatchet and others. Tedeschi Trucks Band guitarist Derek Trucks was born in Jacksonville and maintains a residence and recording facility there with Susan Tedechi.

Other notable Jacksonville-based acts include 1950s bluesman Luther Dixon, 1960s rockers Classics IV, 1990s nu metal band Limp Bizkit, pop punk group Yellowcard and soul-rock outfit JJ Grey & Mofro, and 2000s pop rock groups Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and Shinedown.
