Zappa Can Do That On Stage
Late yesterday news officially broke that Frank Zappa fans had long been waiting for when the Zappa Family Trust confirmed the pending release of Roxy – The Movie. The live concert film composed of recordings made during Zappa’s famed three-night stand at The Roxy in Hollywood, California on December 8, 9 and 10, 1973, shows the master musician/composer/bandleader at his finest, showcasing his astute prowess on stage and complete confidence in the live setting. This week’s Spotify Playlist – Zappa Can Do That On Stage – is made up entirely of live recordings of Frank performing from throughout his storied career.
To maximize the Zappa in this Spotify Playlist, deference was given to the longer, more jammed out tracks from his live releases as was the Roxy & Elsewhere LP which opens and closes the set. As with almost any Zappa collection, there are equal parts of expert musicianship intertwined with irreverent humor and provocative lyrics. The career-spanning playlist features too many amazing musicians to capture them all, including Al Di Meola, Steve Vai, Ike Willis, George Duke, Adrian Belew, Ed Mann, Mike Keneally, Captain Beefheart, The Mothers, Ray White, Napoleon Murphy Brock, Roy Estrada, Lowell George, Ian Underwood and many more. Frank’s work as conductor is also on display leading Ensemble Modern on The Yellow Shark.
Other than the Roxy & Elsewhere entries, no two tracks are from the same album and some cuts – like those from Guitar and Sheik Yerbouti – include studio overdubbing. The 25 tracks clock in minutes shy of a whopping five hours of Frank Zappa showing off everything he could do on stage.
