Yonder Mountain String Band gathered remotely to record a cover of Gordon Lightfoot’s “Shadows.” The quintet’s latest quarantine-style video features a song YMSB learned from the late Tony Rice.
Previously, YMSB guitarist Adam Aijala and multi-instrumentalist Nick Piccininni honored Tony Rice, the legendary guitarist who died on December 25, 2020 by covering “Cold On The Shoulder.” Rice included his renditions of both “Shadows” and “Cold On The Shoulder” on his 1996 compilation album, Tony Rice Sings Gordon Lightfoot.

“Shadows” was originally released by Gordon Lightfoot as the title track of his 1982 studio album. Yonder Mountain String Band’s Ben Kaufmann sings the group’s version of the song and also trades his normal position on bass for mandolin. Piccininni adds dobro, while Aijala picks guitar, Allie Kral plays fiddle and Dave Johnston strums banjo.
