Yonder Mountain String Band Closes Strings & Sol 2016 With Guest-Filled Affair

The 2016 installment of Strings & Sol ended on Monday and Greensky Bluegrass wasn’t the only act to treat attendees to a guest-filled performance. Yonder Mountain String Band brought the main stage action at the Now Sapphire resort in Puerto Morelos, Mexico to a close with one highlight after another including plenty of guest appearances.
After opening with “All The Time,” Yonder showed off “Alison,” the first single off their upcoming studio album, which is due early next year. Later in the 150-minute set YMSB unveiled Dave Johnston’s new tune “Chasing My Tail.” The set’s first sit-in came courtesy of Keller Williams, who led the five-piece through Carole King and Gerry Goffin’s “(You Make Me Feel) Like A Natural Woman.” A few songs later old friend Danny Barnes emerged for “Caveman” and a “Pass This Way” > “EMD” > “Pass This Way” sequence.
Yonder was sure to load the set with old favorites such as “Travelin’ Prayer,” “Years With Rose” and “Traffic Jam.” The group also worked in choice covers including Ween’s “Piss Up A Rope” (debuted on Halloween), the Eagles’ “Life In The Fast Lane” and Lou Reed’s “Walk On The Wild Side.” Reed’s 1972 classic, played as the encore, saw the band welcome many of the event’s other performers, namely Anders Beck, Mike Devol and Dave Bruzza of Greensky Bluegrass, Leftover Salmon’s Vince Herman and Drew Emmitt as well as Tim Carbone of Railroad Earth.
