Yo La Tengo celebrated New Year’s Eve with a performance in San Francisco. The band’s third show of their run at The Fillmore featured Black Sabbath and Foreigner covers as the calendar flipped to 2026.
With New Year’s Day on the horizon, “Big Day Coming” was selected to open the December 31 concert. Ira Kaplan, Georgia Hubley and James McNew delivered other favorites like “Let’s Save Tony Orlando’s House,” “Black Flowers,” “Autumn Sweater,” “Decora” and the sprawling “Pass the Hatchet, I Think I’m Goodkind.” The trio wrapped the main set with Big Star’s “Take Care.”
The countdown to midnight approached and the encore began with Black Sabbath’s self-referential “Black Sabbath.” A devilish character representing 2025 appeared on stage and was cast off by an angelic counterpart portraying 2026. The celebration continued with members of the band’s crew taking the stage for Foreigner’s “Feels Like the First Time.”
The Dils’ Chip Kinman came on for “Sound Of The Rain.” Openers Luna joined Yo La Tengo for The Dream Syndicate’s “That’s What You Always Say,” Donovan’s “Season Of The Witch” and the traditional Grateful Dead staple “Going Down The Road Feeling Bad.” Kinman returned for The Velvet Underground’s “What Goes On.” Yo La Tengo and the guests rounded out the night with “Our Way To Fall.”
