The Wrong Object: Into the Herd

Continuing our late summer stroll through Europe, we find ourselves in Belgium. Truth be told, the RecommNeds don’t make it to Belgium all that often, so whatever brings us here must be good. True, true, so won’t you check out Into The Herd from The Wrong Object. These guys started off as a Frank Zappa cover band and even though this record is all original material, they still wear those influences proudly. The music is better off for it, dense and whimsical, zigs and zags abound, a fusion of jazz, rock, classical and whathaveyou that would make FZ proud. Check it out!

Anatolian Weapons feat. Seirios Savvaidis: To The Mother Of Gods

We now head to Athens, Greece to check out To The Mother Of Gods, a unique album out from musician Aggelos Baltas who typically makes electronic music at Anatolian Weapons. For this record, he collaborated with Greek folk artist Seirios Savvaidis, taking his traditional compositions and essentially “remixing” them into a fascinating new music that bridges the two worlds in creative ways. The result is a kaleidoscopic sound, sometimes hypnotic, sometimes groovy, sometimes utterly psychedelic, but always interesting. Give your ears a little time marinate in this one, I think you’ll dig.

Isasa: Insilio

And now we’re traveling to Madrid, Spain for a change of scenery and a change of pace. Isasa is not the typical deep-psych Eurojams we like to pack your pipe with in these parts. Instead, he scratches another RecommNeds itch with his simple, floating acoustic guitar playing. His new record Insilio stands with the best from our favorites like Glenn Jones and William Tyler, an introspective set of beautiful guitar work, thoughtful and meditative. If you love American primitive, you definitely should give this a listen.

Kit Sebastian: Mantra Moderne

I’ll finish up this week’s set with an absolute must listen from newcomers Kit Sebastian. They’re a duo that’s from London and also from France and Turkey and sound every bit like it. Their debut album is called Mantra Moderne and like Khruangbin’s first release a few years back, is of the remember-when-you-first-heard-it variety. Groovy and exotic, old and new, a buffet of culture and sound, delicious with ethnic flavor, funky vibes and head-spinning melodies. Seriously, get on this right away. Till next week, enjoy!
