Guitarist William Tyler recently visited New York Public Radio to record a Soundcheck podcast live session. Tyler was joined by his frequent collaborator Jake Davis for the session featuring songs from Tyler’s new album, Time Indefinite.
Time Indefinite was recorded by Tyler and Davis using an old tape machine Tyler found while cleaning out his late grandfather’s office in Jackson, Mississippi. The pair used the vintage gear to generate loops that became the basis for the expansive album. Released by Psychic Hotline, Time Indefinite was inspired by and took its title from the 1993 Ross McElwee-directed documentary film of the same name.
“Like a lot of you the last five years have felt like a century and a really strange month,” Tyler shared when Time Indefinite was released. “Our emotional carrying capacity has never been stretched thinner and hopefully this album is a good answer to some of that. It’s definitely my own personal sound diary of some really crazy shit. At least we are gaining a lot of emotional intelligence and empathetic skills right before we actually blow the world up. Anyway – one journey ends and another begins. As one of my all-time favorite Capricorn heroes said, ‘Thank you friends, wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for you.’”
Davis also wrote about the experience of making the album, explaining:
“Coming up in Nashville, William was a sort of North Star figure, proof that there was another musical path that one could take. I guess I ran in that direction and eventually caught up, now we are here at Time Indefinite. It means a lot and I’m so honored to have produced this with him. It’s a special piece of work.
“I didn’t realize we were making a record until it was almost done. It came in mysterious fragments through the years which fatefully aligned to form a complete vision. It was crafted by razor blade and chainsaw. It’s destructive and hopeful, a mirror and a dream, internal and external, unsettled and peaceful, non linear and all at once, analogue and digital, broken and repaired then broken again, surprising and nostalgic, but it’s a product of its time, definitely. Let it find you where you are and feel wherever it takes you.
“Special thanks to the brilliant [Alex Somers] for additional production and mixing work, which added an essential grace and cinematic finesse to our mess of noise.”
Tyler switched between his electric Gibson SG guitar and an acoustic Gibson on the Time Indefinite tracks “Star of Hope,” “Anima Hotel” and “Concern,” the last of which saw the guitarist employing a handheld fan to “strum” the instrument. Davis utilized a variety of synthesizers and electronic tools.

Earlier this week, Tyler confirmed the upcoming release of his debut collaborative album with Four Tet producer Kieran Hebden. 41 Longfield Street Late ‘80s is set to arrive on September 19 through Temporary Residence Ltd. The pair previewed the record with a sprawling, 11-minute cover of Lyle Lovett’s “If I Had A Boat,” as the record’s lead single.
