Guitarist William Tyler released a new single entitled “Flight Final” through the Psychic Hotline label. The recording is Tyler’s first piece of new music since his collaboration last year with Four Tet’s Kieran Hebden.
“Flight Final” was written by Tyler in 2020 during the early stages of the COVID pandemic when he relocated from Los Angeles to his native Nashville area. Having left quickly, Tyler could not bring all of his recording equipment and began storing musical ideas on his iPhone. Tyler also acquired a tape machine that was discovered while cleaning his late grandpa’s office in Mississippi.

Mixing old with new, the new track was further described by press materials:
“‘Flight Final’ explores these liminal spaces, with time and tone bending until the whole world blurs. Samples and sequences first spell out a counting game, pulses and numbers phasing into a Steve Reich fantasia for one. But sighing steel guitar and wistful country licks confuse the chronology even more, pulling the seconds apart until they seem to stretch toward forever, an endless horizon of confusion and wonder. This is a soundtrack to realizing that moving forward never entirely means escaping what is behind you.”
“Flight Final” was co-produced and co-engineered by Jacob Davis and Alex Somers. Recording was done with Davis in Nashville and with Somers in Los Angeles. Tyler plans to follow “Flight Final” with more new music released next year. He will embark on tour of Europe beginning next month.
