Robyn Hitchcock & Spencer Tweedy Guest With Wilco In Chicago: Winterlude Night 2

Wilco‘s Winterlude residency at the Chicago Theatre continued on Monday and the second of four shows in the band’s hometown ended in similar to fashion to night one. Once again, Robyn Hitchcock joined Wilco for a Beatles and Soft Boys cover, though this time it was a different Beatles tune and Robyn’s guest spot followed an appearance from frontman Jeff Tweedy‘s son, Spencer Tweedy.

The sextet have kept their setlist rotation fairly tight since returning for a year-plus hiatus in June. So, coming into the run one of the big questions was whether Wilco would dig deep into their repertoire over the course of the Winterlude. Last night’s show featured a total of 30 songs and 19 were played the previous evening. Seven of those numbers came from Ode To Joy, the band’s recently released studio album. Winterlude 2019 debuts performed on Monday night included “Company In My Back,” “If I Ever Was A Child,” “At Least That’s What You Said,” “The Joke Explained,” “Laminated Cat,” “Passenger Side,” “Forget The Flowers” and “Heavy Metal Drummer.”

Wilco began their encore by paying tribute to Spencer Tweedy’s birthday. The audience sang “Happy Birthday To You” before Spencer replaced Glenn Kotche on drums for “The Late Greats.” Wilco then played the familiar pairing of “Red-Eyed And Blue” and “I Got You (At The End Of The Century).” Next, Robyn Hitchcock – who opened both Sunday and Monday’s concerts – emerged to lead Wilco through the Beatles’ “I Am The Walrus” and his own “I Wanna Destroy You” from The Soft Boys’ Underwater Moonlight album. “I Am The Walrus” was a Wilco debut. The Winterlude resumes on Wednesday night and concludes on Thursday.
