Wilco and Oh You Pretty Things are offering the Sam Jones-directed 2002 documentary I Am Trying To Break Your Heart to stream for free until May 12. The black and white doc traces the contentious plight of the band as they made their landmark fourth studio album, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.
Wilco recorded Yankee Hotel Foxtrot in late 200 and early 2001. But their label at the time, Reprise, an imprint of Warner Music Group, rejected the album and dropped the band from the label due to past record sales. Wilco subsequently self-released the album online in September 2001, which drew the attention of Nonsuch Records, ironically, also owned by Warner. The album would go on to become one of Wilco’s most commercially successful and is widely considered one of the best LPs of the 2000s.
Wilco encourages those who watch the film to “tip” with proceeds benefitting My Block, My Hood, My City a nonprofit chosen by Wilco helping local Chicagoans during the coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak. Click on the link below to stream I Am Trying To Break Your Heart:
