Widespread Panic Plays Several Rare Covers In Norfolk
By Andy Kahn Feb 24, 2016 • 7:53 am PST
Last night, Widespread Panic made a Winter Tour stop at Chrysler Hall Theatre in Norfolk, Virginia. After playing an all-original show earlier in the tour, the Tuesday night concert saw the band break out several rare covers throughout the two-set performance.
The first rarity came toward the end of the first set when WSP played Neil Young’s “Heart Of Gold” for just their third performance of the cover. Three songs into the second set Panic treated fans to their fourth rendition of Led Zeppelin’s “D’yer Maker” having last played it 70 shows ago. Coming out of the Drums/Bass segment of the set, the second ever instrumental jam on “Machine Gun” by Jimi Hendrix was played for the first time in over 80 shows, followed by the first cover of War’s “Four Cornered Room” since 2013 – some 169 shows ago.
“Proving Ground” proved to be grounds for a final bust out as WSP worked just the second performance of Black Sabbath’s “Sweet Leaf” since 2000 and first since Halloween 2014 – an 86 show gap – into the set closing original.
Widespread Panic’s Winter Tour concludes on Friday, February 26 in their home state with a show at Savannah Civic Center in Savannah, Georgia. As always, a live audio stream is available via LiveWidespreadPanic.com.
