Widespread Panic Honors Paul Barrere In Milwaukee

Widespread Panic paid tribute to Little Feat guitarist Paul Barrere, who died one day prior, by covering “Down On The Farm” during their Sunday night show at the Riverside Theater in Milwaukee. The sextet’s third of three consecutive concerts at the venue also featured the return of “From The Cradle” after nearly four years.
Panic opened the show with covers of the blues standard “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl” and Neil Young’s “Mr. Soul.” The band went on to focus on classic original material over the remainder of the first set including “Party At Your Mama’s House,” “Pickin’ Up The Pieces” and “Barstools & Dreamers.”

“From The Cradle” kicked off WSP’s sixth of six 2019 sets in Milwaukee. The band last played the song from 2006’s Earth To America during the 2016 Panic En La Playa festival, which were founding drummer Todd Nance’s final shows. Sunday’s “From The Cradle” was the first with Duane Trucks behind the kit. Next up was “Conrad” ahead of “Saint Ex” and “Jaded Tourist.” Panic then lit into a “Bear’s Gone Fishin'” that bled into “Ride Me High.”
The evening’s “Drums” segment emerged out of the J.J. Cale cover and gave way to “Proving Ground.” John Bell then led his mates through “I’d So Glad” before Panic closed out the frame with “Fishwater.” WSP returned to the stage to begin their encore with a cover of Little Feat’s “Down On The Farm.” Paul Barrere wrote the song that served as the title track of Little Feat’s 1979 studio album. Widespread then ended the evening with “Ain’t Life Grand.”
