Watch Widespread Panic’s Rocking ‘Little Wing’ Performance At Red Rocks
WSP performed the Hendrix classic for just the second time in 16 years at the iconic Colorado venue.
Originally appearing on Hendrix’s December 1967 album, Axis: Bold As Love, “Little Wing” is one of Widespread Panic’s oldest covers. It dates back to a June 22, 1985 show at the Uptown Lounge in their native Athens, Georgia, as per Everyday Companion, before they were officially Widespread Panic. While not yet named Widespread Panic, the Uptown Lounge play is the first show in Everyday Companion’s database after the nascent A-Frame at Weymanda Court performance.
“Little Wing” was a cover staple throughout Panic’s early days until it was shelved in 1989. The band broke it back out in 2006 and played it once in 2007 when it was shelved again. Widespread Panic recently dusted off the Jimi Hendrix classic on April 22, 2023 in Austin, a gap of 897 shows leading up to the Red Rocks play.
WSP opened up their encore at the iconic Colorado venue on June 24 with “Little Wing.” Frontman John Bell handled lead vocals. The cover is naturally a showcase for lead guitarist Jimmy Herring who stayed true to some of Hendrix’s iconic riffs while also injecting his own style into the tune.
