Widespread Panic Halloween | Debuts & Bustouts A Plenty
Widespread Panic celebrated Halloween at 1stBank Center in Broomfield, Colorado this year, where they debuted five new covers and busted out four other songs. The stage at the venue was set up like a mine shaft and the members of the band sported costumes that included John Bell dressed as an elf, David Schools dressed as a miner and Jimmy Herring dressed as a knight.
The Georgia rockers debuted one new cover, Neil Young’s “Heart Of Gold,” during a 77-minute first set chock full of heavy rotation staples. Widespread Panic paid tribute to the late Jack Bruce by opening the second set with a cover of Cream’s “Strange Brew.” Keyboardist JoJo Hermann then led the band through “Greta,” before Panic busted out “Dirty Business” for the first time in 150 shows. Bill Bass assisted on percussion for “Imitation Leather Shoes,” which led into the debuts of “Hit It & Quit It” (Funkadelic) and “D’yer Maker” (Led Zeppelin). After a “Drums” segment, WSP dusted off “Arleen” for the first time since March’s Panic en la Playa. Cheech & Chong’s “Earache My Eye” was the evening’s final cover debut and led into the return of Black Sabbath’s “Sweet Leaf.” The heavy metal classic had been mothballed by John Bell & Co. for 996 shows (last time played = October 27, 2000). The show came to a close with a three-song encore that included a cover of Willis Alan Ramsey’s “Wishbone,” which hadn’t been played in over two years.
