Watch Widespread Panic Pair Dr. John & Grateful Dead Covers With Ivan Neville In 2019

Widespread Panic released pro-shot video of Dr. John’s “I Walk On Guilded Splinters” and the Grateful Dead’s “Cream Puff War” from their 2019 Halloween run at the UNO Lakefront Arena in New Orleans. NOLA legend Ivan Neville helped the band out on keys for the November 2 show.

“Cream Puff War” appears on GD’s 1967 self-titled debut album while “I Walk On Gilded Splinters” is off Dr. John’s 1968 debut album Gris-Gris. “Guilded Splinters” and “Cream Puff War” are two of Widespread Panic’s oldest covers. The latter goes back to WSP’s first year, 1986, while the band added “Guilded Splinters” to their repertoire two years later in 1988, as per Everyday Companion.

Over 30 years later, Panic launched a three night Halloween run at NOLA’s UNO Lakefront Arena on October 31, 2019. The finale on November 2 saw the band wrapping their frist set with a three song seamless sequence of “Sleepy Monkey,” “I Walk On Guilded Splinters” and “Cream Puff War.”

Neviile sat in with the band for all three, joining JoJo Hermann in keyboard world manning the Hammond organ while JoJo handled electric and acoustic piano. Ivan also added vocals to frontman John Bell’s for “I Walk On Guilded Splinters” and helped bassist Dave Schools rev the band up into “Cream Puff War.”
