Widespread Panic Busts Out Blind Faith Covers & More In St. Augustine

By Andy Kahn Sep 17, 2018 8:31 am PDT

On Sunday, Widespread Panic played the final show of three consecutive nights at St. Augustine Amphitheatre in St. Augustine, Florida. The finale featured a pair of Blind Faith covers as well as other rarities.

“Little Kin” > “Sell Sell” opened Sunday’s first set, followed by the first live offering of “Dirty Side Down” since their show on March 2, 2017. Panic staples “Sleeping Man,” “You Should Be Glad,” “Rebirtha,” “Pilgrims” and the classic “Space Wrangler” rounded out the opening set.

A cover of Warren Zevon’s “Lawyers, Guns & Money” served as the second set opener. A couple songs later, frontman John Bell led a take on Blind Faith’s “Can’t Find My Way Home,” which was last played by WSP in St. Augustine almost exactly one year ago. “Greta” > “Surprise Valley” led to a “Drums” segment that saw everyone remain on stage as JB played along with the percussive breakdown. “Proving Ground” emerged from “Drums,” and soon segued into drummer Duane Trucks’ first time performing Blind Faith’s “Do What You Like” since joining WSP, as the song had not been played since September 2014.

A return to “Proving Ground” gave way to a return to “Surprise Valley” and the set-closing “Last Dance.” The night was capped with an encore that started with “Nobody’s Loss” and concluded with a cover of The Guess Who’s “No Sugar Tonight / New Mother Nature.” The band, minus keyboardist JoJo Hermann, came back for an unplanned second encore — the first since October 2016 — and offered up a truly show-closing “Porch Song.”
