Widespread Panic Breaks Out ‘Sleepy Monkey’ In Pensacola

On Wednesday night Georgia rockers Widespread Panic completed a run of two sold out shows at the Saenger Theatre in Pensacola, Florida. While Tuesday night’s show in Pensacola saw Panic bust out “Coconut,” one of their earliest songs, they pulled off a similar feat on Wednesday.

Wednesday’s opening set featured WSP’s first rendition of “Sleepy Monkey,” another song from the group’s earliest batch of originals, since November 12, 2013 (212 shows). Last night’s show began with an “Old Neighborhood” > “Makes Sense To Me” sequence ahead of the Jerry Joseph co-write “Time Zones.” The instrumental “A of D” came next and later the set ended with the old school of pairing of “Sleepy Monkey” > “Stop-Go” > “Conrad.” Current drummer Duane Trucks had never played on “Sleepy Monkey” until Wednesday night’s show.

Widespread Panic came out of the gates with “Disco” to kick off the second set and then strung together “Second Skin” > “Party At Your Mama’s House” > “Stop Breakin’ Down Blues.” Later in the set, “Airplane” served as an improvisational springboard ahead of the night’s “Drums” sequence which in turn gave way to the tour debut cover of Dr. John’s “I Walk On Guilded Splinters.” Following a second set-closing run of “Protein Drink” > “Sewing Machine,” Panic returned for the encore with “Who Do You Belong To?” and their first version of Blind Faith’s “Can’t Find My Way Home” since May. The tour continues tomorrow night at St. Augustine Amphitheatre in St. Augustine, Florida.
