Widespread Panic Busts Out ‘Coconut’ In Pensacola

On Tuesday night Georgia rockers Widespread Panic continued Fall Tour with the first of two sold-out shows at the Saenger Theatre in Pensacola, Florida. The big news of the night was the return of one of the band’s earliest songs: “Coconut.”
The first “Coconut” since the 2015 installment of Panic En La Playa and just the second version featuring Duane Trucks brought last night’s first set to a close. “Coconut” ended another set heavy on old school classics such as “Weight Of The World,” “Pleas,” “Heroes” and “Rebirtha.” The improvisational standout of the opening stanza was a “Pickin’ Up The Pieces” that eventually wound its way into “You Got Yours.” All told, it had been 130 shows since the last “Coconut.”
Panic kicked off the second set with a dream sequence of “Ride Me High” > “Tie Your Shoes” > “Heaven.” Following romps through “Ribs & Whiskey” and “Street Dogs For Breakfast,” the sextet tied together “Mercy” and “Fixin’ To Die” with a “Drums” sequence. Tuesday’s second set came to a close with “You Should Be Glad” and “Pigeons” ahead of the tour debut of “Vacation,” which served as the evening’s encore. Widespread Panic returns to the Saenger again tonight for another sold out show.
