Ween Ends Tour With Wild Encore In Boston

New Hope rockers Ween brought their most extensive tour since reuniting to a close on Sunday night at Blue Hills Bank Pavilion in Boston. The band dug deep into their repertoire at each show of the run with Sunday’s concert featuring songs Ween hadn’t performed since 1995, 2007 and 2008. Last night’s encore was a wild one that included two of those bust outs, a cover debut and the destruction of a guitar.
Ween kicked off a 26-song main set with the instrumental “Fiesta” and treated fans to career-spanning mix of original material throughout. Tour debuts in the main set were “Up On The Hill,” “I’m In The Mood To Move,” “Awesome Sound,” “I’ll Miss You,” “Put The Coke On My Dick,” “The Enabler,” “Fluffy” and “Sweet Texas Fire.” The latter tune was last played by Ween way back on July 15, 2008 – a span of 375 shows.
When the band came out for the encore, guitarist Mickey “Dean Ween” Melchiondo was using a blue acoustic guitar. “Homo Rainbow” was the first song played in the encore and was followed by the evening’s biggest bust out – “There’s A Pig.” Aaron “Gene Ween” Freeman and Melchiondo shared vocals on “There’s A Pig” which was last performed by Ween on June 3, 1995 – a span of 887 shows. The surprises kept coming with a Melchiondo-led cover debut of Kris Kristofferson’s “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down” and the return of “I’m Holding You” after 412 shows. Ween ended the wild encore and tour with “Sorry Charlie” and “You Were The Fool” after which Deaner smashed the acoustic guitar repeatedly against his amp.
