Ween Debuts The Doors Cover & Delivers ‘The Stallion Suite’ In Columbus

On Wednesday night Ween continued their short July run as they headed roughly 140-plus miles Southwest from Cleveland to Columbus for a show EXPRESS LIVE! The quartet of Mickey “Dean Ween” Melchiondo, Aaron “Gene Ween” Freeman, bassist Dave Dreiwitz, keyboardist Glenn McClelland and drummer Claude Coleman Jr. debuted a classic rock cover and treated the crowd to an unexpected surprise during their encore.

The New Hope, Pennsylvania-rockers got their second night in the Buckeye State going with “Don’t Shit Where You Eat” from 1994’s Chocolate And Cheese. From there the band would reel off a string of fan-favorites including “Piss Up A Rope,” “Roses Are Free,” “Bananas And Blow,” “Take Me Away,” “The Mollusk” and “Buckingham Green.” The five-piece act also dug into their catalog for some deeper cuts. “It’s Gonna Be a Long Night” saw action the 25th time ever. “Japanese Cowboy” from 12 Golden Country Greats continued to make its way into setlists since it was revived in 2016 after going missing in action for nearly twenty years. While “I Saw Gener Cryin’ in His Sleep” was dusted for the first time since last June. Last night’s take on the Pure Guava rarity also marked just the ninth time it has been played since 2000.

After a take on setlist staple “I’ll Be Your Jonny on the Spot,” Ween offered up their debut take on The Doors’ “L.A. Woman.” The title-track from Jim Morrison & Co.’s 1971 release came ahead of set-closers “Ocean Man” and “Someday.” Ween saved their biggest surprise of the night for their encore as they offered up a full rendering for “The Stallion Suite” for just the second time ever. The band debuted the five-song suite that’s comprised of “Stallion Pt. 1” and “Stallion Pt. 2” from The Pod, “Stallion Pt. 3” from Pure Guava, “Stallion Pt. 4” from All Request Live, and “Stallion Pt. 5” from the semi-official MP3-only album Craters of the Sac last year in Austin.
