Ween Continues Terminal 5 Run With Bust Outs, Live Debuts & More

By Scott Bernstein Apr 16, 2016 8:37 am PDT

On Friday night, Ween played their second of three sold-out shows at Terminal 5 in New York City. Once again co-founding members Aaron “Gene Ween” Freeman and Mickey “Dean Ween” Melchiondo along with keyboardist Glenn McClelland, bassist Dave Dreiwitz and drummer Claude Coleman Jr. pulled material from throughout the band’s ten studio albums and beyond including many songs they had yet to perform since reuniting in February after a breakup that lasted nearly five years.

Ween pulled from 2003’s Quebec to open the show with “Transdermal Celebration.” A string of live staples along with the band’s third-ever “Transitions” followed ahead of “Voodoo Lady,” the evening’s first 2016 debut. Another post-breakup debut came next as Ween dusted off “The Argus” to the delight of the capacity crowd. The surprises kept coming with “I Play It Off Legit,” a song from 1992’s Pure Guava that Ween had never performed live before last night.

A run of “Puerto Rican Power,” “Gabrielle,” “Wayne’s Pet Youngin” and “The Goin’ Gets Tough From the Getgo” preceded a six-song acoustic segment. Gener and Deaner went unplugged for a section of the show that started with the first “Don’t Shit Where You Eat” since 2010 and the title track from 1997’s The Mollusk. Ween continued to show no material from the band’s past is off limits by busting out “Stacey” from their debut album GodWeenSatan: The Oneness. “Stacey” was last played in 1993. The rarities kept coming as Ween unearthed 12 Golden Country Greats track “I Don’t Want To Leave You On The Farm” for the first time since 1999. “Mutilated Lips” and the 2016 debut of “Don’t Sweat It” brought the acoustic portion of the evening to a close.

It was right back to 2016 debuts when Gene and Dean strapped on their electrics. “Put The Coke On My Dick” made its first appearance since 2011 and was followed by “Demon Sweat” and “Ocean Man.” In 2000, Ween wrote and recorded “Loop De Loop” for an episode of SpongeBob SquarePants. The song finally made its live debut last night. “How High Can You Fly?,” “Stay Forever,” “Tick,” “Papa Zit” and a jammy “Never Squeal” brought the main set a close. Ween said farewell with a “Buenas Tardes Amigo” encore. The band concludes the Terminal 5 run tonight.
