Weekly RecommNeds | Beaches And Thee Oh Sees

Welcome to the first JamBase installment of Weekly RecommNeds, a column penned by Aaron “Neddy” Stein. Aaron wrote for JamBase during the site’s early years and we’re excited to bring him back “full circle.” In this column, Stein details and shares listening links to recent albums he’s been enjoying.

BeachesShe Beats

If you’re like me, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by band names. I mean, how many “Bear” and “Wolf” bands can we be expected to remember? “Beach” is another one of those words in about 20 different band names. But, don’t let it discourage you! I’m going to make this easy for you: forget about all the others and just concentrate on Beaches (Australian, natch!) and their awesome new album, She Beats. It’s a raging, tripped-out, psychedelic guitar jam album that’s probably wholly inappropriate for actually playing at the beach.

Thee Oh Sees Floating Coffin

Pure, unadulterated energy. That’s what you’ll find on Thee Oh Sees blistering new album. This is old school garage rock with updated melodic sensibilities… and some of the creepiest cover art you’ll find. Yes, that image is a bit disturbing, but the concept of fanged menace hiding in sweet, juicy fruit is apt for the music on Floating Coffin. Jangly guitar riffs and awesome songs where punk meets psychedelic: start with “Toe Cutter – Thumb Buster,” one of my favorite tracks of the year.
