Experimental indie-pop duo Water From Your Eyes covered Ween for 988 Crisis And Suicide Lifeline and Sounds of Saving (SoS). Rachel Brown and Nate Amos also spoke about their mental health experiences before performing “If You Could Save Yourself (You’d Save Us All)” for the SoS series Song That Found Me At The Right Time.

The video begins with Brown and Amos talking about how they have supported each other through tough times and how music has helped to heal. Brown shared their mental health experience in high school.

“The reason that I even started making music by myself was ’cause I was really mentally unwell, but I didn’t really know how to communicate. I was like really depressed and suicidal for most of high school. I spent a lot of time thinking that there was no other option besides to have terrible thoughts that ruined my day. I did therapy for a long time. I feel like it gave me the tools, and just the knowledge that you can actually change the way you think. I just started writing songs ’cause it was like the only place that felt appropriate to be expressing the things that I was thinking about.”

Amos shared his struggles with substance abuse. “The past for me, it was music and then substance abuse,” he said. “That was my primary coping mechanism for a lot of things. Before I was really on the path of full self-destruction. It was a really difficult cycle to break and it’s still something that I think about a lot. So now it’s become music and therapy for me.”

“We’re both kind of like compulsive creators,” Amos added, “I don’t think either of us have much of a choice. I just feel bad if I don’t do it.”

Water From Your Eyes then perform Ween’s “If You Could Save Yourself (You’d Save Us All),” originally appearing on the band’s 2003 album Quebec. Watch the interview with Rachel and Nate along with the Ween cover below:
