Back on October 27, 1991 Phish played the first of two shows at Elk Ballroom in Telluride, Colorado. The band made their debut in the gorgeous mountain town back in 1988 as part of a famed first tour of Colorado in 1988 that was immortalized on Colorado ’88. A pair of videos from the night gives us a taste of what went down.
The 1991 performances in Telluride were put together by their old Goddard College friend Kevin Crochetiere. In 2015, a video featuring a portion of the first Telluride ’91 show surfaced on YouTube. There are a number of interesting components to the clip below. First, we get a look at the scene at a 1991 Phish show for a few minutes. Next, we see the band performing the a capella ditty “Memories,” which before the video was uploaded to YouTube wasn’t listed on any of the setlists from that show. Then, we see Crochetiere introduce the band. Finally, the quartet romps through “My Sweet One” and “Chalk Dust Torture.” You’ll also notice Anastasio is not only beard-less, but he also had just shaved his head and looks more like a police officer than a rocker.
Thanks to Brett Connors for filming the show and CEddy10165 for sharing it:
The only other bit of footage from this show on YouTube is this version of “Destiny Unbound”:
