Warren Haynes Kicks Off Solo Tour In Westhampton Beach

Gov’t Mule frontman Warren Haynes opened a rare solo tour with the first of two sold-out concerts at Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center in Westhampton Beach, New York on Wednesday. Haynes mixed songs from his various projects with choice covers over the course of two sets and two encores.

Warren bookended the show with “Traveling Tune” off Gov’t Mule’s most recent album, 2017’s Revolution Come…Revolution Go. He followed the opening song with his tribute to Jerry Garcia, “Patchwork Quilt.” Mule classic “Captured” led into solo gems “Company Man” and “Glory Road” and a cover of Jim Croce’s “Roller Derby Queen.” It was then back to the Mule repertoire for “So Weak, So Strong” and “Raven Black Night.” A take on Dennis Robbins’ “Two Of A Kind, Workin’ On A Full House” bled into “Beautifully Broken” before Haynes closed out the frame with “The Real Thing” from his Phil Lesh & Friends days and a cover of Leroy Carr’s “Mean Mistreater Mama.”

The Asheville native kicked off last night’s second set with Bill Withers’ “Hope She’ll Be Happier” and “Back Where I Started,” a song he co-wrote with Derek Trucks for The Derek Trucks Band’s Already Free LP. Up next was a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “The Big Muddy” and Gov’t Mule classics “Lay Of The Sunflower” and “Endless Parade.” The second set concluded with a medley bookended by George Harrison’s “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)” that included “Into The Mystic” and “Soulshine” within. After a first encore of his own “I’ll Be The One,” James Taylor’s “That’s Why I’m Here” and Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here,” Warren ended the night by reprising “Traveling Tune.”
