Vulfpeck Makes Guest-Filled Madison Square Garden Headlining Debut
Vulfpeck held their first headlining concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Saturday night. The Michigan-based group welcomed many guests during the show, including Dave Koz and Chris Thile.
The band adorned the stage with furniture shipped in from their basement in Michigan. Accompanying Vulfpeck for much of the show was percussionist Richie Rodriguez. Trombonist Melissa Gardiner also joined throughout the night as did a trio of clarinet players that included Michael Winograd. Regular Vulf collaborators, vocalist Antwan Stanley and saxophonist Joey Dosik, were also frequently on stage at MSG.
Drummer Nate Smith, who played an opening set with The Fearless Flyers featuring Vulf guitarist Cory Wong and bassist Joe Dart, joined the headliners on “Daddy, He Got a Tesla.” The set also saw Charles Jones play keyboards and help sing “Baby I Don’t Know Oh Oh.”
Thile, who had just completed taping Live From Here at The Town Hall, emerged with Koz for a rendition of “Smile Meditation” that saw the two guests in a highly energetic exchange. An encore of “Birds of a Feather, We Rock Together” and “It Gets Funkier” closed out the night.
