El Rey Theatre :: Los Angeles, CA

Best known for his work as a founding member of Bela Fleck & The Flecktones, bassist Victor Wooten brought his trio to The El Rey in Los Angeles late last week. Wooten’s trio also features famed drummer Dennis Chambers, whose credits include work with Bootsy Collins and Santana, and acclaimed saxophonist Bob Franceschini, a music vet that has performed with the likes of Mike Stern and Paul Simon. The band focused on material from the recently released TRYPNOTYX.

Wooten welcomed old friend Michael Winslow, remembered as a core cast member of the Police Academy franchise of films. He’s also a comedian and “voicetrumentalist.” Winslow contributed to TRYPNOTYX and added to the live version of “The 13th Floor” at The El Rey and also teamed with Wooten for a wild duet. Franceschini and Chambers each took solos among the bevy of TRYPNOTYX numbers ahead of the “Cupid” encore. The Victor Wooten set was highlighted by one of the bassist’s old songs, “My Life.” Photographer Robert Chapman was on hand to capture the action:
