Umphrey’s McGee Busts Out Tool Cover & ‘Muff II’ In Asbury Park

Umphrey’s McGee played a rarely covered Tool song and one of their old-school originals last night in Asbury Park, New York. The band added their classic “Muff II: The Revenge” to the setlist in the first set and in the second set fittingly covered “Forty Six & 2” on the same day the long-awaited new Tool album was finally released.

The recently introduced “Unsung Hero” was paired with “Go To Hell” to begin Friday’s concert. Another fitting song choice for the show at The Stone Pony, next came the sparsely played “Ride On Pony,” followed by “Cut Off” and the angular instrumental rocker “Eat.” The set progressed with “The Linear” and the first “Muff II” since 2017 (311 shows ago) and just the fifth since 2002. The uplifting instrumental “Glory” closed out the first half.

UM saved their first performance of “Forty Six & 2” since last December for the final slot of the second set. The Tool cover was preceded by “Little Gift,” “It Doesn’t Matter,” “Domino Theory,” “Example 1” and “Educated Guess,” as well as “Hajimemashite” and “End Of The Road.” The Asbury Park crowd was treated to “Puppet String” for Friday’s encore.
