Umphrey’s McGee Pulls Off Wrigley Field Trifecta

Last night the Chicago Cubs welcomed local rock band Umphrey’s McGee to the friendly confines of Wrigley Field and UM pulled off an impressive trifecta at the historic park. Five of the six members of the band (Jake Cinninger was home with his family) handled throwing out the first pitch, singing the National Anthem before the game and performing “Take Me Out To The Ballgame” during the seventh inning stretch.

The night began with Joel Cummins throwing the ceremonial first pitch before the game. Cummins was given the honor despite it being guitarist Brendan Bayliss’ birthday. Bayliss later explained to Cubs broadcasters Len Kasper and Jim DeShaies that he deferred to Cummins after BB’s previously poor performance at a prior game as well as his confidence that this was not the last chance for him to take the mound.

Indeed, it was the band’s seventh time singing the anthem at Wrigley and the Cubs are now 5-2 when they do, after defeating the Milwaukee Brewers last night. Later the five members of UM led the Cubs faithful in the traditional singing of “Take Me Out To The Ballgame” between the top and bottom half of the seventh inning which famously began with late Cubs broadcaster Harry Caray.
