Umphrey’s McGee Busts Out Mashup & Jake Cinninger Guests With Pigeons Playing Ping Pong In Salt Lake City

Umphrey’s McGee continued their summer tour on Sunday night at Red Butte Garden in Salt Lake City. Pigeons Playing Ping Pong opened the evening and welcomed UM guitarist Jake Cinninger for a guest spot.

After PPPP kicked off their lone set with “Walk Outside” and “Time To Ride,” the quartet teamed with Cinninger for the Pigeons original “Poseidon.” Next up was “Avalanche” ahead of a cover of “I Just Can’t Wait To Be King” from Disney’s The Lion King movie. The four-piece capped the set with “Julia.”

Umphrey’s opened their first of two sets with “Conduit” and the year’s second “Get In The Van” and just fourth of the past two years. Another rarity, “Uncle Wally,” followed. Then, the sextet jammed “Tribute To The Spinal Shaft” into “In The Kitchen” and “Speak Up” into “In The Black” to close the frame.

Sunday’s second UM set got underway with an expansive “Nothing Too Fancy” the band left unfinished before they transitioned into “The Silent Type.” Next, Umphrey’s dusted off “Frankie Zombie,” a mashup that combines portions of White Zombie’s “Thunder Kiss ’65” with Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s “Relax” and “Have A Cigar” by Pink Floyd. Umphrey’s last played “Frankie Zombie” on January 26, 2018. The pairing of classics “Glory” and “2×2” led into the end of “Nothing Too Fancy.” A “Bad Friday” ended the set and “The Floor” served as encore.
