Veteran jam act Umphrey’s McGee will issue their 11th studio album, it’s not us, on January 12 via their Nothing Too Fancy Music label. The sextet recently premiered the LP’s first single, “The Silent Type.” A new YouTube clip takes listeners through the evolution of the song.
The history of “The Silent Type” goes back to a home demo guitarist Brendan Bayliss recorded. Umphreaks first experienced portions of the tune through a lyrical “Jimmy Stewart” fans quickly dubbed “Cigarette Cables.” In the clip below, listeners can hear part of Bayliss’s demo, along with the lyrics’ introduction in 2011 and future improvised “Jimmy Stewart”s that included more segments of what would turn into “The Silent Type.” The clip ends with the studio version.
