Umphrey’s McGee :: 03.24.18:: The Wiltern :: Los Angeles, CA

In what has turned into a March tradition, Umphrey’s McGee returned to The Wiltern in Los Angeles on Saturday night. The six-piece’s latest visit to the venue is their fifth annual performance at The Wiltern with each past concert having also taken place in March. UM bookended the show with songs from their recently released it’s not us LP. “Dark Brush” opened the band’s first of two sets in L.A. while “The Silent Type” closed out the encore.

Umphrey’s followed the “Dark Brush” opener with the party-rocker “Bad Friday.” The rest of the first set would be a huge “Bridgeless” sandwich. An intense jam out of “Bridgeless” gave way to the classic “Example 1.” UM followed with “Rocker II” and then linked “Draconian” to the end of “Bridgeless.” Saturday’s second set began was improv-heavy versions of “Wappy Sprayberry,” “The Floor” and “Booth Love” ahead of a standalone “JaJunk.” The evening’s big surprise was “Once In A Lifetime,” as Umphrey’s hadn’t performed the Talking Heads hit since they debuted the cover with the help of the Chicago Mass Choir on August 14, 2015. “Maybe Someday” off it’s not us closed out the second set. Guitarist Brendan Bayliss led the group through “Hajimemashite” to start an encore that ended with “The Silent Type.” Photographer Robert Chapman was on hand and captured the action:
