Umphrey’s McGee dusted off a cover of J.J. Cale’s “Cocaine” while performing the encore of their show Saturday in Miami. Widespread Panic drummer Duane Trucks was behind the kit for the concert at the Miami Beach Bandshell.
Trucks’ participation was part of his four-show stint filling-in for newly appointed UM drummer Scotty Zwang. Longtime UM drummer Kris Myers recently stepped away from the band. Outside of Trucks’ four-show run, Zwang is expected behind the drum kit with UM for the remainder of the year.
Leading up to the encore, UM closed the first set of the night by breaking out a cover of Frank Zappa’s “Dirty Love” with percussionist Andy Farag taking center stage to handle lead vocals. Umphrey’s last covered “Dirty Love” in February 2023, a span of 199 shows between setlist appearances.
Set two consisted of all original Umphrey’s McGee material made up of “Day Nurse,” “40’s Theme,” “All In Time,” “Partyin’ Peeps” and “Wappy Sprayberry.” “All In Time” incorporated elements of the Fletch movie theme and was split around “Partyin’ Peeps” and “Wappy Sprayberry.”
Keyboardist Joel Cummins began the encore with a solo rendition of his piano-centric piece “Orfeo.” The band then busted out “Cocaine,” which had not been covered by the group since 351 shows prior, in March 2020. The uplifting instrumental “Glory” brought the concert in Miami to an end.
