Umphrey’s McGee landed their Cruising Altitude 2025 Tour at Stubb’s Waller Creek Amphitheater in Austin for a Sunday night concert. The band enlisted the services of Andy Arthur Smith, handing the microphone to the comedian/musician/creator for Tenacious D’s “Kielbasa.”
Including the Stubb’s performance, UM has covered the lead track to Tenacious D’s 2001 self-titled debut album a total of nine times. Introduced by guitarist Brendan Bayliss as the band’s “new friend,” Andy Arthur Smith showed off his skills at mirroring Jack Black’s enthusiastic singing style while handling lead vocals on the raunchy “Kielbasa.”
Before the encore, Bayliss mentioned that longtime area-resident Willie Nelson’s birthday is tomorrow, but since the band would not be around then, they would instead play “Whiskey River” for him at Stubb’s. UM recently debuted “Whiskey River” during their country-oriented UMBowl set in Nashville.
Mid-song, Bayliss told a wild whiskey-infused tour story about an early-career visit to Austin when late co-founding drummer Mike Mirro pulled a window blind off the wall of a nearby hotel.
