By Scott Bernstein Jul 29, 2019 12:31 pm PDT

Twiddle presented guest-filled sets and told the stories behind classic songs as part of their headlining performances at the 2019 Tumble Down Festival at Waterfront Park in Burlington on Friday and Saturday nights. Kitchen Dwellers, Todd Stoops, Dave Grippo and Zach Nugent were among the band’s guests at this year’s event.

The quartet went acoustic for their first performance of the fourth annual Tumble Down. Up first was a medley based off Bush’s “Glycerine” before Twiddle played such classics as “Earth Mama,” “Hattibagen McRat” and “When It Rains It Pours.” Guitarist Steve Girardi was the event’s initial guest and sat-in on “When It Rains It Pours.”

The voice of “Colonel Norco” came over the speakers as Twiddle took the stage for their second set. After opening with “Orlando’s,” Twiddle performed “Amydst The Myst” and “Doinkinboink” before working an unfinished “Grandpa Fox” into a rendition of “Apples” featuring keyboardist Todd Stoops. A segment of “Mamunes The Faun” and “Every Soul” closed out Friday’s second set. The story of “Jamflowman” was told to accompany the version hat kicked off Friday’s third set, which included a new verse. Later in the set, the voice of “Colonel Norco” returned to the venue PA while Twiddle was working through “Nicodemus Portulay.” The band was joined by saxophonist Dave Grippo during the “Lost In The Cold” that ended the frame and Twiddle then encored with “River Drift.”

The origin story of Twiddle original “Ricky Snickle” played over the PA before the four-piece performed the song with an extra verse to begin Saturday’s first set. Guitarist Jaden Carlson sat-in on the “Syncopated Healing” that followed and soon thereafter Kitchen Dwellers performed their original “Visions Of Mohr” backed by Twiddle. More collaborations were in store as Twiddle got the second set off the ground with guitarist Zach Nugent and keyboardist Todd Stoops adding to “Polluted Beauty.”

Nugent and Stoops vacated the stage as Twiddle jammed “Gatsby The Great” into a version of “Pond” that incorporated “Zazu’s Flight.” Twiddle then finished the “Grandpa Fox” from Friday before closing out their fifth set of the weekend with “Be There.” The story of “Frankenfoote” played over the PA before Twiddle encored with a version of the song that included a new fourth verse. Stephen Marley, Turkuaz, Kitchen Dwellers and Ghost Light were among the other acts that played Tumble Down this past weekend.
