While travel issues prevented Twiddle keyboardist Ryan Dempsey from making it to Charlottesville for the opening concert of the quartet’s fall tour on Tuesday, the show went off as scheduled. Longtime Twiddle pal and collaborator Scott Hannay filled in for Dempsey at The Jefferson Theater.

“I‘ve been in the airport since 3am in Burlington VT,” wrote Dempsey on Facebook in explaining the predicament. “Every flight has been canceled due to weather. I did everything I could to make the show in Virginia tonight… I watched the skyline at 5am flying over nyc to get turned back to VT.” Thankfully, Ryan Dempsey made it to Charlotte for last night’s Twiddle concert.

Enter Hannay (Wild Adriatic, Mister F, Umphrey’s McNES) who joined guitarist Mihali, bassist Zdenek Gubb and drummer Adrian Tramontano at The Jefferson. Tramontano has kept Brook Jordan's seat warm while the Twiddle drummer continues his touring hiatus.

The four-piece focused on live staples to get the one-set show in Charlottesville underway with “Collective Pulse,” “Syncopated Healing” and “White Light.” A jam out of the latter led into oldie “Apples.” Twiddle worked Talking Heads’ “Girlfriend Is Better” and beloved original “Every Soul” within “Apples” on Tuesday.

Recently debuted original “Fighting For” kept the frame rolling and was the evening’s first cut from Twiddle’s 2022 studio album Every Last Leaf. Next up was “Plush” for the band’s second performance of Stone Temple Pilots’ 1993 hit following the cover’s debut this past April. “Polluted Beauty” then bled into “The Box” to close the set. Twiddle turned to Every Last Leaf again to get Tuesday’s encore underway with “Beautiful” before treating fans to a “Lost In The Cold” finale.

“It was a great honor and privilege to be asked to cover for Ryan Dempsey of Twiddle last night in Charlottesville, VA after his flight was redirected back home, keeping him from getting to the show,” shared Hannay of the experience on Facebook. “It was an incredible night of music that I won’t soon forget!!”

Twiddle appears at Suwannee Hulaween tonight and plays Tipitina’s in New Orleans tomorrow.
