Twenty Years Later | Page And Trey Sit In With Widespread Panic

Twenty years ago tonight Phish keyboardist Page McConnell and guitarist Trey Anastasio sat in with Widespread Panic as part of a memorable encore at The Roxy in Los Angeles. Phish was in town to record the album that would eventually become Hoist and were in the middle of one of their longest breaks from the road since the band was formed ten years prior.

The Georgia band’s two sets were fiery and filled with many of the best songs from their repertoire. A soundboard recording of the show that surfaced soon after served as an introduction to Widespread Panic’s music for more than a few fans. Keyboardist T. Lavitz was a member of Panic in 1991 before he left to re-join the reunited Dixie Dregs. Lavitz sat in with his old mates on “Make Sense To Me” in the middle of the second set at The Roxy.

When Widespread Panic returned for their encore on that fateful night they were joined at first by Lavitz and Anastasio for Professor Longhair’s “Get Up Early In The Morning,” sung by JoJo Hermann. There aren’t many Trey Anastasio/Michael Houser duels, but the one in “Early” shows off the incredibly different yet brilliant approaches each guitarist brings to the table. Yet it’s the near 15-minute cover of “Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys” featuring Anastasio and McConnell that’ll knock your socks off. The musicians take their time working their way through the Traffic cover and even head off on an excursion based on David Earle Johnson’s “Time Is Free” along the way. It’s a shame there haven’t been more Panic/Phish jam sessions over the years because what went down 20 years ago at The Roxy was magical.
