Trey Anastasio Trio Begins 3 Show Run In New Orleans

The Civic Theatre in New Orleans hosted the first of three Trey Anastasio Trio shows on Thursday night. Guitarist Trey Anastasio continued to incorporate freshly selected tour debuts while delivering several classic Phish tunes and TAB favorites across the evening’s two sets.
Anastasio, bassist Tony Markellis and drummer Russ Lawton kicked of their trio of performances in NOLA with three Phish songs: “No Men In No Man’s Land,” “Party Time” and “Ocelot.” Trey encouraged audience participation during the subsequent “Heavy Things,” commenting “You guys are amazing” after the sing-along. TAB staples “Dark And Down” and “Night Speaks To A Woman” came ahead of the recently incorporated original “Everything’s Right,” which closed the first set.
Anastasio’s uplifting newer song “Soul Planet” began the second set with Trey injecting fierce lead work within the prevailing jam. The trio slowly eased into Phish’s “Ghost” enveloping the crowd for several minutes in a layer of funk rock. The TAB/Phish crossover “Back On The Train” kept the second set rolling before a pair of tour debuts in the form of “Rise/Come Together” and “A Case Of Ice And Snow.” The reggae-tinged “Windora Bug” was warmly received and a boisterous “Gotta Jibboo” offered Trey one last chance to drive a lengthy improvisational segment before wrapping the set.

The encore started with Trey alone on stage with an acoustic guitar to play the tour’s first “Strange Design.” Anastasio told the audience he skipped an alligator barbeque at a friend’s house in town while stalling for time before selecting “The Wedge” to play and further explained his thought process in choosing the song “about sharks” once the performance was complete. Markellis and Lawton then came back out to assist the trio’s recently debuted sped-up arrangement of Phish’s “Camel Walk.”
