Trey Anastasio Continues Solo Acoustic Tour In Indianapolis

Trey Anastasio loaded his Saturday night acoustic show at the Murat Theatre At Old National Centre in Indianapolis with Phish classics. Anastasio also took the opportunity to hilariously explain how he relates more to “wook culture” than “woke culture” and shared memories of performing in Indiana.
The Phish guitarist opened with a run of “Theme From The Bottom,” “Back On The Train” and “Free.” Anastasio then followed the instrumental “The Inlaw Josie Wales” by talking about his history in the area performing at Deer Creek, the Murat and Bloomington. He recalled a period in 1994 when Phish brought Rev. Jeff Mosier on the road for a series of shows. Trey noted Mosier was a member of Col. Bruce Hampton’s Aquarium Rescue Unit and that Hampton often felt his musicians were too good so he would screw with the tunings on their instruments. Anastasio went on to shout out the other members of ARU and mentioned one of the best lessons he learned from Bruce was that if your guitar is out of tune, “just play it better!”

Anastasio continued to perform solo acoustic versions of material from various eras of his career including “Sample In A Jar,” “Limb By Limb,” “Ghost” and “The Wedge” from the mid-1990s as well as more recent fare such as “Blaze On,” “Miss You,” “Winterqueen and “My Problem Right There.” Trey dipped into the Ghosts Of The Forest repertoire for the title track, “If Again” and “Brief Time,” while he also trotted out the instrumental “‘Til We Meet Again.”
“Of course today we have ‘woke culture,'” Trey said ahead of “Driver” before adding, “I prefer ‘wook culture.’ It’s my mind of culture. I understand it, you know what I mean? I don’t understand the rules to ‘woke.'” He then told a story of working as a dishwasher at Sid’s Deli when he was 16-year-old. Trey explained his co-worker Walter would make cole slaw by mixing all of the ingredients in a massive vat with his arms in a way that his sweaty armpits were engulfed in the cole slaw. “The next time you have cole slaw, think of Walter,” Anastasio joked. “Wook culture, that’s what’s gonna save us!” Last night’s main set ended with a run of “Bathtub Gin,” “The Lizards” and “Wilson” and an encore featuring “Waste,” “Shade” and “More.”
