Trey Anastasio Crashes Cyro Baptista’s 75th Birthday Party Concert

Renowned percussionist Cyro Baptista held a birthday concert at Lincoln Center in New York City billed as “Cyro Baptista At 75: A Banquet For The Spirits.” Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio, whose Trey Anastasio Band includes Baptista, participated in the celebratory concert held in the Rose Theater.

Baptista titled his 2008 album Banquet Of The Spirits and used it for the name of the band that included bassist Shanir Ezra Blumenkranz and keyboardist Brian Marsella, who were part of the 75th birthday concert ensemble.

Others who performed with Baptista included Jason Fraticelli, John Lee, Felipe Hostins, Scott Kettner, Hassan Hakmoun, Carlos Eduardo de Costa, Zé Luis, John Altieri, Junior Karegato and Sofija Knezevic. Dancers Max Pollak and Chikako Iwahori were also part of the “Banquet For The Spirits” production.

Anastasio emerged near the end of the second set and began his guest spot with the Phish/TAB song “Blaze On.” Anastasio switched to an acoustic guitar and sat next to Baptista as the two were left alone on stage for the TAB song also recorded by Anastasio’s Oysterhead side project (titled “Radon Balloon”).

Trey’s initial time on stage ended with his return to electric guitar for a full band take on the TAB live staple, “Olivia.” The evening’s encore also included Anastasio’s participation. The finale began with “Forro For All,” a Baptista original performed by TAB three times in fall 2002. Anastasio steered a segue into an instrumental version of “Tweezer Reprise” that went back into “Forro For All” to bring an end to the festivities.
