Tool bassist Justin Chancellor revealed in a new interview that the band plans to start recording a new studio album in the “second half of the year.” Chancellor spoke about the follow-up to 2019’s Fear Inoculum during a chat with Consequence of Sound’s Heavy Consequence.

The progressive metal act will devote the first half of 2024 to touring. A U.S. tour starts tomorrow (Wednesday, January 10) in Baltimore and runs through February 18. Tool will then hit Europe and the UK in May and June.

“Well, there’s a lot to be put together,” the bassist told Heavy Consequence of the next Tool album. “We have, as usual, loads of ideas, loads of stuff that didn’t get used — constantly writing new stuff. I write something, I immediately know it’s for Tool. It sounds the right way.”

While it’s been five years since the release of Fear Inoculum, the band went 13 years between the release of that LP and 2006’s 10,000 Days. Chancellor doesn’t expect the wait for Tool’s sixth album to be quite that long.

“I’d say by June we’re going to be back home after Europe, and the second half of the year we’re going to get in and give it another go to try and put some of it together,” the bassist added. “We’re not going to be taking so much time over it if we’re going to do an album. We’re going to figure out how to do it a little bit quicker.”

The full interview with Justin Chancellor and MTVoid bandmate Peter Mohamed will be posted by Heavy Consequence soon. Click below for a complete list of Tool tour dates.
