Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson sat in with Tool during their concert Monday night in Toronto. Lifeson’s guest spot at Scotiabank Arena featured a performance of “Jambi.”

Lifeson’s sit-in followed a similar sit-in by Billy Strings, who also played “Jambi” with Tool during their concert in Salt Lake City in October. Frontman Maynard James Keenan later called Strings' appearance “random.”

Lifeson and Rush bassist Geddy Lee performed Rush’s “YYZ” with Tool drummer Danny Carey at last year’s all-star tribute concert in Los Angeles honoring late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins. After last night’s surprise appearance at Scotiabank Arena, Lifeson shared a message regarding his time on stage with Tool and revealed he gifted Tool guitarist Adam Jones his signature Epiphone Les Paul guitar.

“What an honour and delight it was playing with one of my favourite bands last night,” Lifeson wrote. I’ve loved [Tool] since the first time I listened to them. They are such a great band and I am lucky to call them friends.”

Despite Tool’s strict restrictions on using cameras, covertly captured footage of Lifeson sitting in with Tool last night in Toronto was recorded in the video below:
