The band dug deep on night one of the tour filling the setlist with many deep cuts that hadn’t been performed in years. Of particular note was the live debut of “Tweeter And The Monkey Man” – a song of The Traveling Wilburys’ 1988 debut album Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1. Other bust outs included the opening “So You Want To Be A Rock And Roll Star” Byrds cover which had gone unplayed since Petty’s 1997 Fillmore Residency, Damn The Torpedos track “Louisiana Rain” (last played in 1989), and a rare cover of Muddy Waters’ “I Just Want To Make Love To You.”
For all the rarities, there were also plenty of hits performed last night as The Heartbreakers reeled through such classics as “Free Fallin’,” “Yer So Bad,” “Refugee,” “Don’t Come Around Here No More” and “American Girl.” Petty And The Heartbreakers next return to the stage tomorrow night as one of the headliners of the Hangout Music Fest in Gulf Shores, AL.
