Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 captured a Live on KEXP session back in May. The youngest son of Afrobeat trailblazer Fela Kuti and his father’s former band delivered three songs from their 2024 record, Heavier Yet (Lays The Crownless Head), for the Seattle-based independent radio station.

Lead vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Seun Kuti and Egypt 80 — Valentin Pellet (Trumpet), Anis Benhallak (Guitar), Kunle Justice (Bass), Aniklawon Camau Bernstine (Drums), Fabsmith Fila (Tenor Sax), Nicolas Sakelario (Baritonist) — came to KEXP studios on May 7 at the tail end of a six-show residency at Jazz Alley in Seattle.

Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 launched the session with “Stand Well Well,” a song originally appearing on the band’s 2024, Lenny Kravitz-produced record, Heavier Yet (Lays The Crownless Head), which also spawned a collaboration with Kelvin “Posdnuos” Mercer of De La Soul. Heavier Yet’s “T.O.P.” followed before the band wrapped things up with “Emi Aluta.”
