Guitarist Tom Leadon was a member of The Epics, a Gainesville, Florida-based high school band that included Tom Petty on bass. The pair of musicians would go on to form the short-lived Mudcrutch in 1970, which featured future Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers members Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench. Leadon and Petty reformed Mudcrutch in 2007 and again in 2016, which included the release of their album 2 and the band touring together nationally for the first time.
Leadon recently shared a video in honor of Petty who died last month of cardiac arrest at the age of 66. The clip showcases Leadon on acoustic guitar and harmonica performing his newly penned tribute “My Best Old Friend.”
