Third Phish From The Archives Magnaball Edition Airs

Phish‘s Magnaball festival today aired the third of three From The Archives installments on the fest’s radio station The Bunny. Just like Thursday and Friday’s From The Archives sets, Phish archivist Kevin Shapiro dug up standout recordings from the band’s vault, sharing more notable moments in Phish history.

Kevin kicked off the 17th From The Archives Volume 3 installment on Sunday afternoon with Phish’s September 8, 2000 show opening debut cover of Bob Marley’s “Mellow Mood” from the Pepsi Arena in Albany New York. Shapiro then spun a recording of the second set opening “Timber Ho” from July 26, 1997 at Southpark Meadows in Austin, Texas that featured Surrender To The Air drummer Bob Gullotti alongside Jon Fishman and a mellow, over 15 minute jam. “Reba” from Old Orchard Beach, Maine on July 3, 1994 was up next, including a gorgeous instrumental interpolation of “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” in the middle of the Phish staple. Another 1997 second set opener, this one the “Character Zero” from Hartford Civic Center on November 26 closed out the first hour of Sunday’s FTA installment, treating those tuning in to an atypical (and only set two opening) 20+ minute “Zero.”

The second hour began with another second set opener as Kevin dug up a slow, chunky “Wolfman’s Brother” from the September 11, 1999 concert at The Gorge featuring a killer funk jam that segued into the Phish debut of “Sand” totaling over half an hour between the two songs. After reminiscing about the past 10 major Phish festivals and calling out many of the people who have been involved in staging each of the events, Kevin spoke for a bit with Trey’s brother-in-law and Higher Ground owner Kevin Statesir before dropping a mighty “Harry Hood” from October 20, 1994 at the Mahaffey Theatre in St. Petersburg, Florida, drawing From The Archives at Magnaball to a close.
