The String Cheese Incident Bust Out Tom Waits & Pink Floyd Covers In Chicago
By Nate Todd Nov 10, 2019 • 10:32 am PST
The String Cheese Incident closed out their three-night run at Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre on Saturday night. The band busted out songs by Pink Floyd and Tom Waits in a first set studded with choice covers. The band would also close out the evening with a Peter Gabriel tune.
Cheese kicked off the first set with Waits’ “(Looking For) The Heart Of Saturday Night.” The band dusted off the tune for the first time in nearly 15 years. SCI debuted the song in 2004 and played it 10 more times up until its last appearance on October 10, 2006. The song is the title track off Waits’ 1974 album The Heart Of Saturday Night. “Turn This Around” then led into Pink Floyd’s “Breathe” — last time played on August 12, 2017 — before heading back into “Turn This Around.” After “Bhangra Saanj,” Cheese treated the Chicago crowd to Talking Heads’ “Nothing But Flowers” from the band’s swan song 1988 album Naked. “The Big Reveal” closed out the first frame.
Set two got underway with the Billy Nershi-penned “Colorado Bluebird Sky” ahead of “Get Tight” and “All We Got.” “Windy Mountain” then led into “Hi Ho No Show” followed by “Dirk” and “Glory Chords.” The second set came to a close with “Beautiful.” SCI retook the stage for a cover of Peter Gabriel’s “Shaking The Tree” for the encore.
