The Get Up Kids stopped by KEXP’s Seattle studios in September while on tour to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their landmark album Something to Write Home About. The highly influential rockers offered a selection of songs from their 1999 sophomore LP.

The Get Up Kids are widely considered forefathers of the emo and pop-punk genres, with bands like My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy citing the group from Kansas City as a major influence. Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz said this of The Get Up Kids in a 2005 interview with Alternative Press:

“There should be a How To Be a Pop-Punk Kid starter kit with bands like Get Up Kids, so kids would know whose shoulders bands like us are standing on. Fall Out Boy would not be a band if it were not for The Get Up Kids.”

The Get Up Kids’ Something to Write Home About was a key work in the band’s influential sway. The group embarked on a tour around the 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of Something to Write Home About, which brought them to Seattle in September where they captured a Live on KEXP performance.

The Get Up Kids — Matt Pryor (Vocals, Guitar), Jim Suptic (Vocals, Guitar), Rob Pope (Bass), Ryan Pope (Drums) and Dustin Kinsey (Keys, Synth, Vocals) — launched the session with Something to Write Home About’s “Holiday.”

The band then rolled through Something to Write Home About standouts “Action & Action,” “Valentine,” “The Company Dime” and “Ten Minutes.” Watch The Get Up Kids perform Live on KEXP and chat with host John Richards below:
